A single-use suction tool is a sterile suction cannula or tip that is opened for one procedure and discarded afterward. HNM Medical manufactures single-use suction tools for cardiac surgery in tip sizes from 3 mm to 5.5 mm, including Yankauer, Cooley-Medoff and Andrew Pynchon designs. Each one arrives sterile, so every patient gets a new instrument and the hospital skips the cleaning, inspection and sterilization cycle that a reusable suction device requires.

Pass rate after reprocessing
Of 190 suction-type metal lumen instruments, only 60.5% passed ATP bioluminescence testing after cleaning.
Lumens with residue
A borescope study of 40 lumened surgical instruments found debris or discoloration in all of them, even after recleaning.
Cases with contaminated tips
In 25 aortic valve replacements, bacteria were found on one or both suction catheter tips in 80% of cases.
Suction tips are lumened instruments, and lumens are hard to clean. Brushes do not reach every surface, and the inside cannot be seen without a borescope. That is why suction-type instruments fail cleaning verification at the rates shown above.
Contamination also happens during the case. The authors of the aortic valve study concluded the suction device should be treated as a potential source of contamination in cardiac surgery.
